Divisions of
Public Works |
| The Administration division oversees the planning and operation
of the various divisions of the Public Works Department. The staff in this division
includes the Director of Public Works, the Assistant Director of Public Works and a
clerical staff. The main responsibility of the division is to set the goals and objectives
for the Public Works Department and administer the policies as set forth by the City
Council. |

| The Building and Grounds division
maintains six (6) City owned buildings including City Hall, two fire stations and both
public works buildings. In addition this division maintains three well sites, four water
pumping stations, one winter salt storage building, one park and two retention ponds. This
division is also responsible for the right-of-way maintenance within the City. |

| The Refuse division collects residential
refuse and yard-waste for residential customers within the City. Refuse Collection Guidelines Curbside Recycling
is collected on the same day as your refuse by a company contracted by the City. For

| The Underground Utilities division is
responsible maintaining the underground water distribution system and the network of sanitary sewer and storm sewer pipes throughout the City. Maintenance includes repairing
watermains and hydrants, rebuilding or replacing manholes, and flushing and televising

| The Street Maintenance division maintains
approximately seventy miles of streets within the corporate limits of the City.
Maintenance includes sweeping, crosswalk and lane line striping, snow removal, pot hole patching and crack sealing. This
division is also responsible for the maintenance of 136 miles of City parkways including the installation or repair of
traffic control signs and signals, tree maintenance, curbside brush collection,
sidewalk repairs, and street light repairs. |

| The Water division is comprised of four
factions which include administrative, production, distribution and metering. The
administrative offices handle all billing functions of the division. New accounts are also
set up by this office. Production is responsible for delivering portable water to all City
customers including industrial, commercial and residential. Approximately 1 billion
gallons of Lake Michigan and well water is pumped yearly. The City maintains 5.5 million
gallons of storage facilities, four pumping stations and four deep wells. The water
delivery system includes two elevated tanks, 85 miles of water main and 1,200 fire
hydrants. The water division also reads and maintains industrial, commercial and
residential water meters throughout the City. The City is also required by
the EPA to produce an annual Water Quality Report for its users.

| The Vehicle Services division, this
internal service division, maintains all City owned vehicles and equipment including
police cars, fire trucks, administrative vehicles and public works trucks. |
