The Community Development Department encourages a healthy, safe and prosperous community through programs and activities that benefit the residential and business sectors. Community planning, land use control, code education and enforcement and economic development are aspects directed and administered by the department. Safe and compatible elements of the built environment are emphasized as is economic opportunity.

**New State & Federal Mandates**

  • After April 2010 the EPA is requiring all contractors doing renovation to homes constructed prior to 1978 to become certified in lead-paint safety, to show this certification when registering as a contractor, and to implement this new safety procedure during the project (Federal Mandate)

  • Effective 1/29/2010, all window replacements will require a building permit - even same-size replacement windows.  Energy efficiency information is to be submitted with application. (State Mandate)

The department’s goals are achieved through various divisions and programs. They are: Administration, Planning & Zoning, Permits and Inspections, Health and Housing, Business Licensing and Economic Development. Each is dovetailed with the others resulting in a coordinated and balanced approach to the community’s existence and growth.

Specific tasks performed include community planning, processing development applications, permit issuance, building inspections, property maintenance review, rental dwelling licensing, health and sanitation inspections, business and contractor licensing and coordination of economic development activities.
